About This Campus

Surrounded by the beautiful Sarasota Bay, Mote’s primary research campus encompasses 10.5 acres on City Island, Sarasota. Here, Mote’s mission of world-class marine research, conservation and education thrives. City Island has been our home since 1978, and southwest Florida has been our home from the very start, when Mote was founded in Placida in 1955.

This campus served as the home of Mote Aquarium from 1980 through July 2025, when Mote concluded its ticket sales on City Island to prepare to open the new Mote Science Education Aquarium at Nathan Benderson Park.
